 There are 1,170 mines and over 8,000 sites containing 80 types of minerals
registered in Mongolia.
The mining sector accounts for 30 percent of GDP, 65.5 percent of total industrial
products and 88.2 percent of exports.
The latest survey shows there are 127
companies in gold, 44 in fluorspar, 28 in coal and 22 in construction material
minerals. Most of them mine the ore and do some preliminary refinement.
There are only about 10 companies such as Erdenet copper-molybdenum, Bor-Undur
spar, Tumur-Ovoo zinc, Olon Ovoo gold, Khutul cement, Erel cement, Darkhan
metallurgy and Erdmin cathode copper that process the ore to a mor4 advanced
level.
